Sig Klein on Handstand Presses

Klein trained in a very precise, scientific fashion. He reminded Jim of an Old World

Of all his exercises, Klein’s Handstand press-ups were the most remarkable. Jim had never seen anything like it.

Klein performed the exercise on an old piano bench. He began placing his hands in the center of the bench. From there, he leaned forward and effortlessly kicked up into a free-standing, unsupported handstand. Klein had begun his career as a hand-balancer and stage performer, and he had no difficulty in maintaining the handstand position for as long as he wanted.

Once in the handstand position, Klein bent his arms and slowly lowered his body until his upper chest touched the edge of the piano bench. He then reversed the movement slowly and effortlessly, pushed himself back to the handstand position. He performed 15 reps with ease.

“What’s your best in that?” asked Jack.

Klein wiped the sweat from his forehead.

“Nineteen,” he replied.

“That’s a lot of press-ups!”

“I believe it’s more than anyone else has ever done in that style. I’ve often wondered how many reps Maxick or some other old timers could perform.”

“You’re awfully good at them, Sig.”

“Thanks, Jack. It’s like anything else – it’s just a matter of practice. Press-ups are one of my favorite exercises, an I include them in almost all of my workouts. They’re one of the very best for pressing power.”

This is an excerpt from Brooks Kubik’s new book Legacy of Iron, which I just finished this morning. If you want to learn how many of the old-timers trained this book is for you. While most of it is concerned with weightlifting and competitions surrounding the York Barbell Club, you get a mix of all the various means of physical culture.

Back in that day hand balancing went right along with lifting iron. Even Bob Jones makes an appearance earlier in the book as one of the contest’s judges along with a few other famous hand balancers.

Achieving Handbalancing Success in 2008

If you celebrate Christmas then I hope you had a wonderful time yesterday. If not, well then I still hope you had a great day. But Christmas means one thing is coming.

That’s right, the end of the year is fast approaching. I have always found the new year is a reflective time for myself. But it is also a time for forward thinking.I spend a full day, and sometimes more, reviewing the past year and planning the next.This goes way beyond a simple New Year’s Resolution which is almost destined to fail. Instead it is more like a dissertation on the major components of my life and a long list of goals.Every year my system gets better and I expect this time to be no different.

Of course hand balancing and all aspects of my physical training make up one of those sections.

It starts with going over my results from the last year. Since I keep a training journal I can look over the various workouts I have done. What worked best and what didn’t. Which ways of training really made the biggest gains.

The second step is to figure out what I really want to accomplish. Since I have so many goals and dreams I have to pick out the ones I have a burning desire for and work toward those first.

Others get completed without much effort and some just fall away. In the future I can always reset my priorities to complete any goal. But its important to focus on just a few at a time.

The third step is smart planning. What you need to do is break down a big goal into small and simple steps and plan when you will complete those steps. Just follow your formula and the goal becomes a matter of time.

This applies to all aspects of life whether its business, relationships, nutrition, or training.

But since you are here for the hand balancing I will take an example from there. You need a plan in order reach a goal. Instead of creating one yourself, why not just follow one that is already complete.

All you have to do is select your goal from the Hand Balancing Mastery Course then keep to the steps Prof. Orlick lays out.

If your goal is to be able to perform a handstand for one minute then just work backwards from that point. If you can hold the handstand for only 5 seconds right now then all you have to do is add second by second until you get there.

Perhaps give yourself two months to reach your goal. Figure out where you should be week by week then go after it.

The birth of a new year is a powerful time. Instead of just celebrating it, use it to accelerate into 2008 with fury.

Handstand Hold for Time

Here is a great way to finish off your workouts whether you are doing just hand balancing or anything else by doing a handstand hold.

Its really simple, too.

Just kick up into a handstand against the wall and hold it there for as long as you can. Try to stretch your toes upward and maintain good posture the whole time.

If you want you can even do a couple sets.

This is great because it will build your endurance in your arms, shoulders, back, everywhere.

As you steadily increase the amount of time you can hold a handstand you will find you get less fatigued when you practice your hand balancing.

It will test your mental toughness too. You can always stay up one more second if you really wanted to. A great way to finish off your training is to leave it all behind.
